Previously saved audio may continue to be used to improve other audio technologies unless you delete it. We take steps to protect your privacy as part of this process, like disassociating your audio from your account when reviewers analyze it. Video history is Nest’s cloud-based video recording and storage service. Your Google Nest camera or doorbell automatically stores video securely to the cloud so that you can access it anytime. Use this article to learn more about how to access video history for your cameras in the Home app. However, it’s still a reasonable concern for anyone worried about privacy.

Audio is saved when your device detects an activation. Devices may support different types of activations, like “Hey Google,” a quick phrase you turn on, continued conversations, or mic presses. Some devices include a few seconds before the activation to catch the complete request. This setting affects anywhere you’re signed in to Search, Assistant, and Maps, for example, the Assistant on both the Google Assistant app and a Google Home smart speaker. With a Nest Aware subscription, your camera uses advanced algorithms to improve its sound and video event detection and send you better notifications.
How to hear (and delete) every conversation your Google Home has recorded
In the case of voice assistants, audio pre-recording helps systems handle requests instantly. Without a perked ear for that "Alexa," "OK Google," or "Siri," these assistants would need activation buttons. The overall experience of using the Google Home app has been great so far, but by far the best feature is the 24/7 recording option and built-in power. I’ve been quite pleased with every aspect of it so far. I get alerts instantly, it loads fast, and I can browse full history with ease in the Google Home app.

Just hit the mute button again to have Home start listening again---and recording and sending audio snippets again, too. The semi-good news is that you have a bit of control over whether audio clips are saved or recorded at all. Disabling recording is only an option in Google Home, and when you do it, the device basically doesn't work.
Bringing the power of search to audio.
For example, Google Map’s street view cars were found in 2010 to have been accessing nearby open Wi-Fi networks and vacuuming up unencrypted data over years across multiple countries. In response, Google said it collected this data by mistake. It also said listening in on unencrypted Wi-Fi networks wasn’t illegal, likening the act to listening to public AM/FM radio stations.

It also allows you to play back audio recordings, though you'll likely find that some will be lost in your account and simply show up as 'Unknown Voice Command'. Before you confirm the deletion, Google will warn you that the deleted data can’t be recovered, including a link to Google’s policies regarding data collection and deletion. Once you click delete, the query is gone forever with no ability to undo.
Record a video meeting
If you have Nest Aware Plus and you switch to Nest Aware, you’ll lose any event video history older than 30 days, and your last 10 days of 24/7 history will be converted to event video history. Regardless of which Nest camera you have and whether you have a subscription, you can access your camera’s live video stream anytime in the app. With an Event Video History subscription, your camera only saves clips to the cloud when it detects important sound or motion. With 24/7 Video History, your camera saves all footage to the cloud anytime it's connected to power and streaming video. If your camera or doorbell powers off completely , it can't record and save events to its internal memory.

You can't, however, narrow it down to a specific time. So if you talk to your Google Home all day, constantly, you'll have to hunt for it a little more. On the My Activity page, you could scroll and scroll and scroll for days and days and days. For just voice recordings, look below the search box, where it says + Filter by Date & Product. Click here, leave the date set to "All time." Then uncheck All Products and put a check next to Assistant and Voice & Audio.
Newer cameras and doorbells will have their video history timeline in the Home app. Or, select “Delete activity by” on the left-hand side of the page. Here, you can delete by the day, set a date range, or select all time.
If you only use Chrome in “Incognito Mode,” put tape over your laptop camera, and worry about snoops sniffing your packets, a web-connected microphone in your home seems risky. But recording your voice is a major part of how voice assistants work. Here’s how devices like Echo and Home record your voice, why they do it, what they do with the data, and how to scrub those recordings. All Nest cameras can detect sound and video events and notify you when something happens. If your camera has event video history or 24/7 video history, you’ll be able to review the footage of the activity in the app. For event video history, the time between recorded events (when there’s no activity) appears as gaps in the timeline.
Tap Share link for options for how to share the clip. Now that you’ve turned voice collection off, you can delete what Google already has. Just click on “Manage Activity” beneath the toggle on the Activity Controls website. Looking for up-to-date social media and technology news for families? If you switch from a 1st gen Nest Aware to a new Nest Aware subscription, your camera’s existing 24/7 video history will switch to event video history. If you get Nest Aware Plus instead, you will receive 10 days of 24/7 video history, and 60 days of event video history. If you have Nest Aware and upgrade to Nest Aware Plus, your 10 days of 24/7 history and 60 days of event video history will start when you purchase your new subscription. If you have a newer camera like Nest Cam or Nest Doorbell , you can get up to 3 hours of event video history without a subscription. But for most older Nest camera and doorbell models, you need a Nest Aware subscription to get event video history or 24/7 video history. This means that without a subscription, you can get photo snapshots of detected activity up to 3 hours in the past.
Finally, click “Delete” to delete the selected recordings. But, does listening and recording cross the line? We’d certainly say someone who scooted up close to listen in on a private conversation was snooping.
It’s tied in with your iCloud+ account, and people on the $10.99/month plan can have unlimited cameras. HomeKit Secure Video allows you to view recorded footage on your home security cameras in the Home app. All of the recorded footage is end-to-end encrypted, and none of the video counts toward your iCloud storage. You can access HomeKit Secure Video on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or Apple TV. Contractors hired by Google have been listening to audio recorded by its virtual assistant—even files recorded after the “OK, Google” wake word wasn’t invoked—reports Belgian outlet Vrt Nws. If you want to delete all queries within a certain period of time , click the hamburger icon on the “Today” header, or the “Delete activity by” link on the left-hand side of the page on desktop.
